Speech therapy is designed to help children speak and communicate more effectively.
Assessment Focus
A speech and language assessment will determine the presence of any difficulties or disorders related to :
- Understanding and use of language in different settings
- Clarity of speech (words/sentences)
- Fluency and Voice disorders
- Oromotor skills – swallowing, feeding, and chewing
- Pragmatic Skills i.e. the use of language in social context like conversational skills.
Assessment
The speech and language therapist (SLT) will assess the child's speech and language development through :
- Interview with family and caregivers
- Observations made during play and interaction
- Formal and informal tests
Outcome
The SLT will determine
- The extent of the child’s communication difficulties
- His or her areas of strength
- The level of family support
The SLT will also help the family create an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) to address the needs of the child and family.
Therapy Details
The SLT will provide the intervention to support the child’s speech-related challenges and work to improve the child’s expressive and receptive
language and, where necessary, introduce other ways of communication besides talking (augmentative and alternative communication)
Features of speech therapy include
- Working directly with the child to support the difficulties related to communication. Support oromotor abilities and feeding concerns.
- Involving and training family members so that they can practice strategies that were used during therapy sessions in daily routines and activities.
- Small group therapies for children with similar speech and language goals.
