As Ummeed’s training reach has increased and we now have trainees skilled in diverse domains working in common geographies, and we have started initiatives to help them work with each other and create sustainable inclusive local systems beyond the organizations they represent.
This work was first started as a pilot in three geographies – Jalgaon, Hyderabad, Guwahati+ – and later expanded to two more geographies – Pune and Kashmir. Our partners in these geographies include medical professionals, child development centers, parent- run organizations, community-based organizations, NGOs and Schools. Our goal is to support our partners to deliver the following collective outcomes:
Early identification
Better access to early & appropriate intervention services
Empowered children and families (platforms for their voices)
Collaboration and synergies among organisations at the geography level
Ummeed engages with government systems in multiple ways. This has included:
The social work team provides direct support to children and families to access their rights (e.g., acquiring disability certificates and UDID cards, and providing support for school admission, etc). Besides guiding families, Ummeed's social work team has also directly worked with government officials to build relationships and streamline processes.
Teams such as the School Services Team (SST) have conducted sessions on classroom and school inclusion for teachers and special educators from BMC schools, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) officials and others. Likewise, Ummeed’s Early Childhood Development and Disabilities (ECDD) team has supported partners working with the ICDS system for training and support to Anganwadi workers and their supervisors.
Ummeed’s team has been part of panels and taskforces for the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and SSA for the Government of India, amongst others.
