The Early Intervention Center (EIC) program is year-long,
caregiver-child, play-based program following a structured
pre-school like curriculum for children with special needs
between the ages of two to six years. It is based on Ummeed’s
principles of family-centered, strengths-based, and
transdisciplinary philosophy of care.
The program is aimed at preparing children for entry into
mainstream regular, inclusive, or special schools
The program uses the PREP (Pathways and Resources for Engagement and Participation) intervention protocol to set goals and work with the child and the caregiver through a mix of classroom style sessions and active caregiver engagement. The idea is to build partnerships with the caregivers and impart skills that help the caregivers support their child to mirror the skills imparted at Ummeed in other environments. The program works at multiple levels – at the core are the strategies taught to the child, strategies imparted to the caregiver form the secondary level and the final level is the interaction between the child and caregiver.
The caregivers play the role of a facilitator to help the child in communication, and build social and motor skills through a play-based approach. The EIC team works on facilitating the caregiver-child interaction by sharing goals, discussing strategies, modelling, and providing opportunities for these interactions. Several caregiver workshops are also conducted throughout the year to help caregivers learn how to use play to work with the child, working towards functional independence, understanding challenging behaviours and developing strategies.
Children are trained on important facets such as communication skills, play skills and social interaction, with the objective of getting them ready for school and independence at home. Working with their children and the Ummeed team at the EIC helps empower caregivers to work well with their children in the home environment and make decisions for their children.
